VERMONT IDLE-FREE FLEETS

The Amercian Lung Association's Vermont Idle-Free Fleets campaign provides business fleet operators with a toolkit that explains the myths and realities associated with truck idling, the health effects of diesel exhaust, the cost savings achieved by an idling reduction policy, and sample model policies.

The campaign, funded by a grant from the Vermont Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC), also offers PowerPoint presentations and technical support for businesses in Chittenden County and Rutland County. Rutland County has the highest rate of emergency room visits due to asthma. Eliminating unnecessary diesel idling is a win for Vermont businesses, public health and the environment. For more information about the campaign, contact Wayne Michaud at idlefreefleetsvt@lungne.org or call the American Lung Association in Williston at 802-876-6860.

Vermont Idle-Free Fleets campaign news

Vermont Idle-Free Fleets began after the American Lung Association in Vermont (ALAVT) received a grant from the Vermont Department of Environmental Conservation in the Fall of 2009. The goal of the year-long campaign (ending Dec. 2010) is to increase the number of Vermont diesel fleet operators adopting idling reduction policies by 12. Rebecca Ryan, ALAVT Director, Health Promotion & Public Policy, hired Wayne Michaud, Director of Idle-Free VT as part-time coordinator of the campaign. Wayne, ALAVT staff members and technical advisors began the preliminary work of creating and printing an information toolkit and PowerPoint presentation. Listings for diesel fleet operated businesses in Chittenden and Rutland counties were gathered. A timeline was established. Vermont Idle-Free Fleets officially launched in January 2010 with a statewide press release and email blitz to businesses. Since then, Wayne has continued with phone and email followup, resulting in toolkit and presentation requests.

WHAT CITIZENS CAN DO

We are working hard to impress upon fleet operators the negative impacts of excessive idling. You can help make a difference in company policy by complaining to companies when observing incidences of excessive truck or bus idling.
